About the Artist
ARTIST STATEMENT
Joanne Agabs is an artist/illustrator working in various visual arts media. Creating a personal narrative by visually recording her space and time has been at the core of Joanne's practice. Whether it is capturing the essence of a small moment through a still life, or a more literal recording of her street corner in New York City, the illustrative nature of her chosen media (pencils and watercolor) capture the intimate energy of objects, spaces in her daily life and even herself through her portraiture. Combined these current series evoke emotion and thought surrounding the artist’s current sentiments, experiences and place in time.
ARTIST BIO
Born in Singapore, Joanne spent much of her childhood in Singapore, Japan and Thailand drawing and painting alongside her mother, a professional printmaker. Joanne earned her degree in Fine Art from George Washington University with a concentration in drawing, where recognition of her work included the Robert N. Alfandre Award for Drawing.
Today, Joanne lives in New York City with her husband and two children. She shows her work in galleries throughout New York. In addition to creating her own work Joanne has created a children's art curriculum which she teaches as a series of workshops to elementary aged children.
